Let Down (2023)
Moving image, text, latex upholstered bench, PVC strip curtains.

Let Down uses footage from dairy farms focusing specifically on the machines used within milk extraction as the subjects of the film. These systems of pipes and vessels have an animated bodily quality to them, their motion is both repetitive and chaotically humorous. In contrast the animals and humans involved in the processes are absent, visible only in brief glimpses.

Let Down is a continuation of my exploration into the intricacies between internal experiences and the external world, focusing on social behaviours and the influence of technology within food systems and agriculture. I consider these industrial processes as a reflection on the dynamics of our increasingly isolated social relations in a technologically dominated world. I am interested in the diary industry is one of production but also control, transformation and alchemy, entangled with bodies, health and memories. A sentence I keep returning to is that ‘To feed and be fed is to consume and merge’.
